What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the mesh-like structure inside the bone becomes damaged. When the internal strands of the bone become too thin (lose density), the bones become weak and can fracture or break easily. When a bone with osteoporosis is broken, it is called a “fragility fracture.” Though fragility fractures can occur anywhere in the body, the most common occurrences are spine fractures, hip fractures and wrist fractures. Other long-term effects of osteoporosis can include spinal curvature and loss of mobility.

If you believe you might be at risk for osteoporosis or are currently managing an osteoporosis diagnosis, the Bone Health Clinic at Gulf Orthopaedics is here to help. Call 251-435-BONE for more information.
